What is Bitcoin

Bitcoin is the first and best-known cryptocurrency, created in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto as peer-to-peer digital money that runs without any bank, company or government. Transactions are verified by a worldwide network of computers and recorded on a public ledger called the blockchain.

Its defining feature is a hard cap of 21 million coins. No one can ever create more, which underpins its reputation as "digital gold" and a hedge against the inflation of traditional currencies. New coins enter circulation slowly through mining, and that issuance halves roughly every four years.

On the markets Bitcoin trades as BTC against the dollar, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It is by far the largest cryptocurrency by value, its direction tends to lead the entire crypto market, and it is the headline asset most automated crypto strategies are built around.

What moves Bitcoin

Supply and demand

New buyers, funds and companies competing for a capped supply move the price in both directions.

The halving cycle

Every four years the new supply is cut in half, a long-watched driver of Bitcoin’s multi-year cycles.

Macro and rates

Bitcoin increasingly reacts to interest rates, the strength of the dollar and the market’s appetite for risk.

Headlines and flows

Regulation, large institutional moves and big news can swing the price quickly.
